WADA Statement on the passing of its Vice President, Rev. Dr. Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was deeply saddened today to learn of the passing of its Vice President, Rev. Dr. Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile at the age of 72. Dr. Stofile had been hospitalized in recent weeks, and sadly succumbed to his illness today with his family at his side at home in Alice, South Africa.

Dr. Stofile had been a member of WADA’s Executive Committee and Foundation Board for several years; and, in 2013 he was called upon by his fellow public authority members to return to WADA in the role of Vice President, to which he was appointed in January 2014.

Dr. Stofile played an integral role in the evolution of WADA; and, as South Africa’s Minister of Sport and Recreation from 2004 - 2010, in promoting the values and importance of sport in South Africa and across the African continent. His contribution to his native land extended well beyond sport as he performed a vital role in the liberation of South Africa.

“WADA would like to recognize the contribution Makhenkesi Stofile made both within sport and indeed wider South African society throughout his life,” said WADA President, Sir Craig Reedie.

“It was a tremendous honour to have known such a remarkable person, and to have benefitted from his wisdom and experience. Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to his family at this time.”
