Statement on CAS decision to sanction Jan Ullrich

Statement from WADA President John Fahey:

WADA has welcomed the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to find German cyclist Jan Ullrich guilty of a doping offense.

The decision to uphold the appeal of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has again demonstrated that athletes can be found guilty and sanctioned many years after they have committed an anti-doping offense.

WADA commends the UCI on seeing this case through to its proper conclusion, and observes that CAS conducted a very thorough hearing with consideration for all issues.

It represents another victory for cycling and for clean athletes worldwide, and a further example of how law enforcement investigations – in this case Operation Puerto - can produce evidence of non-analytical anti-doping violations.

It is a pity, however, that this evidence did not come directly from the Spanish authorities.

WADA looks forward to full disclosure of all the evidence gathered by the Spanish Guardia Civil and expresses frustration that this evidence has been withheld from the sporting world to date.
